Bertha (Brandt) Timmens turns 100 years old

An Open House honoring Bertha (Brandt Timmens on her 100th birthday was held on July 10, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church, 314 N. Pine St., Avon South Dakota from 2PM - 4PM.

July 16, 2011
Barbara Wepking of Avon, South Dakota and formerly of Springfield will celebrate her 85th birthday with cake and coffee from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at Avon’s Meadow View Manor, 508 Birch Street.

Gov. Rounds appoints Oster to head state Department of Education Oct 3, 2008

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds announced today the selection of Thomas Oster, Avon, to be the new Secretary of the Department of Education.

“I am very pleased that Tom Oster has agreed to accept the cabinet position as Secretary of the Department of Education,” said Gov. Rounds. “He has administrative and leadership skills that are essential to managing the many facets of this department. Tom is a tested educator and superintendent who focuses on what is best for our students.”

Iro Mogen - Avon South Dakota Superintendant 1964Iro Mogen was the Superintendant at Avon South Dakota. Mr. Mogen was born on Jun 18, 1932 in Watertown, SD and attended Yankton College, AB; University of South Dakota, MA and Ed.D.

March 1935
The Avon Basketball team lost to Tabor 24-38. The 2nd team won it's 6th game of the season 37-9.

June 1935
Mr. O.H. Bochman and Miss Florence Gardner were married in Tyndall on June 1st. They left for a trip to the Black Hills.

Some of us remember Larry Lyngstad as our music teacher at Avon Public School. Mr. Lyngstad is retired now and living in Pierre, South Dakota. Lyngstad has been volunteering through the Central South Dakota Retired & Senior Volunteer Program since 2009.

Larry was quoted in an article from the Pierre Capital Journal; “I’m not an outstanding volunteer or doing anything extraordinary,” Lyngstad said. “I’m just an average volunteer.”

Lyngstad volunteers for a number of programs, including the St. Mary’s foundation, reading buddies program, South Dakota Discovery Center, Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center and the Southeast Community Church. In Jun/Jul 2011, Lyngstad has been helping families who are displace by the flood by helping to provide food and assisting at the Emergency Operation Center in Pierre and Fort Pierre.

November 1948
Theran Jay Koehn was born November 14, 1948 in a 1938 Chevrolet between Tabor and Yankton, South Dakota to Theodore and Vivian (Vinson) Koehn. Theran graduated from Avon High School in 1967.

December 1910
William Muller, well-known farmer and rancher, visited in Avon enroute for Sioux Falls.

Corn shellers are at work on the new crop.

Mrs. Wooley, wife of the popular principal of our public school, aside from her teaching duties, visits Yankton each Saturday taking vocal lessons.

Mr. Koolish, the enterprising head of the Avon Mercantile, presented each of the rural carriers with a handsome pair of driving gloves.

Complaints have come in to the County Supt. office that certain teachers spend too much time in school writing letters.
